ZIMBABWE CROWNED AFRICAN WOMEN’S CHAMPS IN HARARE

  • Mayers and Mugeri set up total of 115 as Namibia rue missed chances in the field

  • Zimbabwe now through to Women’s T20 World Cup Qualifier in Scotland later this year

  • Zimbabwe also through to Women’s World Cup Qualifier scheduled for 2020

Zimbabwe ended a consistent week with another quality display, beating Namibia by 50 runs to win the ICC Women’s Qualifier, Africa 2019 tournament on Sunday.

Having gone through Group A unscathed, the hosts faced a plucky Namibian outfit, as they looked to erase the memory of two years ago – when they lost to Uganda in the final.

Having been asked to bat first, Zimbabwe scored 114 for five on a slow track.

Not for the first time this week, Sharne Mayers was in the runs with a sprightly 36 from 44 balls at the top of the order. Chipo Mugeri-Tripano also chipped in with 36, as they added 66 for the second wicket.

That stand ensured Zimbabwe had a decent total to defend, given their strong bowling options. For Namibia, Kayleen Green continued her fine tournament with tidy figures of two for 22.

In the chase, Namibia slumped to 16 for three inside the power-play, and that undermined their pursuit completely. Anesu Mushangwe then entered the fray, with three for just 6 runs in her four over spell.

Having struck with the new ball, Josephine Nkomo then returned in the latter overs to claim two more scalps, for figures of three for 12. Namibia clung on to bat out their 20 overs, but they could only muster 64 for nine, as Zimbabwe closed out a most satisfactory week on home soil.

Scores in brief:

Zimbabwe vs Namibia

Zimbabwe: 114 for five ( S Mayers 36, C Mugeri 36, K Green two for 22)

Namibia: 64 for nine (A Mushangwe three for 6, J Nkomo three for 12)

Zimbabwe won by 50 runs
