On Monday, 27th March 2023, Cricket Namibia was honored to receive a visit from the International Cricket Council (ICC) Chairman, Mr. Greg Barclay. The ICC global leader was in Namibia the past three days to engage with our Board Members and stakeholders before departing this morning, the 2nd of March 2023.
Being an Associate country and one of the 108 Members represented by the ICC, this is an important milestone for cricket in Namibia to have the leader of the world cricket governing body visit the Cricket Namibia family.
At the Cricket Corporate Community breakfast hosted today, 2nd of March at Utopia together with our Board Members, our partners, and the Chief Administrator of the Namibian Sports Commission, the ICC Chairman confirmed that his visit to Namibia is to strengthen the ties of cricket in Namibia ahead of exciting cricket developments; co-hosting the 2026 U19 World Cup and the 2027 Men’s Cricket World Cup.
Mr. Greg Barclay: “I wanted the Board Members and the CEO of Cricket Namibia to share the support they would need from ICC, but also equally important for me to see what is happening within the country. Being on the ground and in the country is a core part of my role and an important function for me to perform.”
Mr. Barclay emphasized the importance of growing women’s cricket. “I will be delighted If I can help grow the women’s game to a level it reaches the men’s cricket. We have good momentum, we are moving forward in a positive way to make cricket a much better place. We can do a lot with cricket and cricket can do a lot in providing for the country.”
“For the game to keep moving forward, stakeholders need to come together to contribute in any way they can. It is pleasing to see the level of support Cricket Namibia has from its corporate and commercial partners. The enthusiasm for the game is mindblowing, I love the optimism, engagement, and involvement with the game.”
Mr. Barclay’s unique visit gave our stakeholders and sponsors the chance to exchange ideas with a sitting ICC President to help shape the future of the game and understand the value and benefits of their involvement in cricket.
We are delighted to have hosted the ICC President in Namibia and we are confident the visit will further accelerate the development of the game in the country.
